The annual report released by the NCRB (National Crime Report Bureau) states that Tamil Nadu is recorded as one of the top 10 states in road accidents on national highways in 2022.
In recent years, Chennai has reported an increase in road accidents. The total number of accidents recorded in Tamil Nadu is 45,484 accidents (12.4%), which tops the list among other states. However, the fatality rate is considerably lower compared with Uttar Pradesh.
Road accidents can be caused by a variety of factors, including drunk driving, driving on the wrong side of the road, disregarding traffic signals, and failing to wear seat belts or helmets.
The causes could be many, but the act of being irresponsible is the only factor for all the violations.
People were caught driving without a driving license. Traffic police are working on inspecting the rate of people driving vehicles without a valid driving license.
Another major violation is not wearing helmets and seat belts. A penalty has been imposed on those who are found without a helmet.
Though the government has made it compulsory to wear helmets and seat belts, certain people are violating them. Why are people reluctant to follow traffic rules and safety precautions? Why are people unconcerned about accidents?
Chennai ranks as the 1st city to contribute with 4,389 total accidents in 2020. In terms of over-speeding, it is reported that Chennai accounts for 672 deaths.
The peak times for road accidents are recorded around 6 pm to 9 pm and 9 pm to 12 pm. Compared to gender-based accidents, more men aged 30 to 45 have died compared to women and trans people.
The traffic police department is working keenly to implement strict penalties to ensure road safety. Apart from this, various road safety programs have been conducted by the government and NGOs.
Unforeseen road accidents cannot be prevented. However, accidents caused by human errors can be prevented.
As a citizen, it is our sole responsibility to abide by the traffic rules and follow precautionary measures. Altogether, we could make Chennai a place for “safety roads”.
