World Environmental Health Day
World Environmental and Health Day is held every year to bring attention to how the environment affects people’s health. This year’s theme is “Water.” “What water?” It’s our world’s most precious resource and a vital source for the food we eat. But it’s also the key to environmental sustainability.
What is World Environment and health Day?
World Environmental and Health Day also wants to show how important it is for people to get involved in issues that affect our everyday environment, like transportation routes, power plants, how we get rid of trash, and how we take care of water. To mark the day, we’re asking you to share your views with us about how we can improve the world’s health by protecting our global environment.
We’ll post a variety of opinions on the Hub, including those of people who are part of the Hub community. So take a few moments to look after your own health as well as that of people and animals around the world.
Water is essential to life; we need it in order to grow, stay healthy, and survive. But the world’s water supply is under a lot of stress, especially in developing countries where water demand has grown faster than supply.
This lack of fresh water—which usually means a lack of sanitation—is leading to an increase in diseases such as cholera, dysentery, and diarrhea, affecting people across the globe. Widespread diseases that are spread by water are a serious threat not only to people’s health but also to their progress as a species.
The World Health Organization says that diarrhea kills more than six million children every year and can lead to deaths that could have been avoided because of malnutrition, disease, or bad hygiene.
In order to celebrate World Environmental Health Day, here are some easy ways you can reduce your impact on our world’s freshwater reserves: Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth, wait 2 minutes before flushing (to allow water pressure), use a low-flow showerhead (we’re talking about you Britney!), and invest in an eco-friendly car! And as always, don’t forget to recycle.
