Mosso joined a large group of women to show their support for Iran’s anti-hijab demonstrations. The artist cuts her hair on stage in support of the Iranian protesters in a video that has since gone viral on social media.
The anti-hijab protests in Iran are currently in full swing, and even famous people from other countries are supporting the cause through symbolic actions. The most recent example comes from Turkey, where singer Melek Mosso showed her support for Iranian women by cutting off her hair on stage.
On September 17, the death of Mahasa Amini, 22, who was detained by morality police enforcing strict hijab rules, sparked protests in Iran. Because she did not properly wear her hijab, the 22-year-old woman was beaten to death by Iran’s controversial morality police. Her family reported that she died as a result of being beaten while being held by police.
The protests have now reached at least 46 Iranian cities, towns, and villages ten days after her death.
Over 75 people have been reported killed in clashes with security forces during the protests, according to a rights group.
Turkish Artist Melek Mosso Trims Her Hair On Stage
Mosso, 33, is primarily a jazz vocalist who also plays the Western concert flute. Mosso is no stranger to controversy when it comes to using her power to make statements about social and political issues.
Mosso publicly criticized Musa Orhan’s release in 2020, shortly after which she was removed from the stage. Orhan was a police sergeant who was convicted of rape.
Mosso will undoubtedly face criticism in light of the current incident from pro-Ayatollah groups in Turkey and Iran, but given her track record, it appears that she will be prepared to respond vehemently as always.
