During a speech in the EU assembly, a Swedish MEP chopped off her hair in support of the anti-government protests that were started in Iran after Mahsa Amini, 22, died while in the care of the morality police.
“Our anger will be greater than the oppressors’ until Iran is free. We will stand by you until the women of Iran are free “Abir Al-Sahlani, who was born in Iraq, made her statement on Tuesday night in Strasbourg, France’s parliament.
She then chopped off her hair while chanting “Jin, Jiyan, Azadi,” which is Kurdish for “Woman, Life, Freedom.”
Amini was killed after being detained in Tehran on September 13 for “inappropriate dress,” and prominent French actresses Juliette Binoche and Isabelle Huppert have both chopped off hair in protest.
The young Iranian woman who died while in the care of Iran’s morality police, Mahsa Amini, was also mourned by prominent French actresses such Juliette Binoche and Isabelle Huppert by cutting off a lock of hair.
The Islamic Republic’s rigorous dress code is upheld by the morality police.
Binoche chopped out a sizable chunk of her auburn hair and held it up to the camera, saying, “For Freedom.”
With a Farsi interpretation of the Italian protest song “Bella ciao” playing in the background of the video montage, Binoche was joined by other French A-list actors and musicians including Marion Cotillard and Isabelle Adjani in getting their hair cropped.
“The morality police mistreated Mahsa Amini till she passed away. She was only charged with inappropriately donning her veil. She perished because some of her hair was visible “read the caption on the Instagram video soutienfemmesiran uploaded (Support for Women of Iran).
On other social media sites like Facebook and Twitter, the post has received a lot of retweets.
“Iranian women look to the foreign world for help. This is a lovely way to demonstrate your support, “According to French attorney Richard Sedillot, who brought the lawsuit.
“This is just the beginning; I hope that everyone in the world, not just actors and actresses, will follow. I believe that men will likewise chop their hair at some point.”
Other French women, including lawyers and media figures, have followed suit.
Since her passing, Iran’s clerical leaders have had to deal with the country’s worst domestic turmoil in years. In support of Iranian protesters, demonstrations have also extended to London, Paris, Rome, and Madrid.
