Barbara Woodward, Permanent Representative to the United Kingdom in the United Nations, on November 17 said that her country has long called for the expansion of the Security Council. She added that the United Kingdom supports the inclusion of India, Germany, Japan, and Brazil, in addition to permanent African representation on the Council.
The world is different now than it was in 1946 when the security council first met or as it was in 1965 when it was last expanded all the challenges we are facing today are more complex and more interconnected with the whole world including threats to the charter that bind us together and its principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.

After the UK supported India’s bid for a permanent seat at the United Nation security council, France on Nov 18 backed India’s claim for a permanent seat at UNSC. Speaking at UNGA meet at UNSC reforms, France’s deputy envoy to UN Nathalie Broadhurst said that France supports the candidacy of Germany, Brazil, India, and Japan as permanent members of the UNSC.
