The highly anticipated sequel to the Avatar film series is ready to hit theaters. Since its announcement, this movie has been eagerly awaited. The predecessor to the film, Avatar, broke box office records set by the 1997 movie, ‘Titanic’. Fans expect an even greater visual treat in the upcoming one. James Cameron worries that the film has to bring in a large sum of money to cover its expenses
In an interview, director James Cameron called his own sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water , “the worst business case in movie history.” He says that in order to recoup its projected $250 million budget, his much anticipated sequel will need to rank among the best-performing films of all time. Avatar 2 would need to surpass either Star Wars: The Force Awakens or Avengers: Infinity War in order to become the third or fourth highest grossing movie in cinematic history. Such lofty expectations are a bit disconcerting to a filmmaker.
The Way of Water exceeding $2 billion is not unimaginable given that the 2009 release of the first Avatar film is the all-time global box office champion with an astounding $2.9 billion to its credit. It already has a spot on the list of the most expensive films, with an approximately $250 million budget. With a $422 million budget, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is the most expensive film produced to date.
Final Avatar trailer was released on Tuesday
The final trailer of the epic science fiction film, Avatar: The Way of Water directed by James Cameron and produced by 20th Century Studios was unveiled on Tuesday. Similar to the prequel, this one also gives viewers a look of the aesthetically spectacular extraterrestrial setting with a breathtaking ride deep into the ocean that director James Cameron laboriously built over a decade. Tickets for The Way of Water, which opens in theatres, on December 16, are currently available.
The two-minute clip provides a more in-depth look into Jake Sully’s life and the life of his young family. We can assume that the ocean will serve as the new backdrop for the film because the new trailer features some stunning shots of Pandora and aquatic life similar to those in the teasers. Cameron spent several years perfecting the technologies needed to record underwater motion.
