On Sunday in Qatar, Lionel Messi finally fulfilled his dream of winning the World Cup as Argentina defeated France to win the trophy for the third time. Argentina prevailed on penalties in the championship game following a dramatic 3-3 tie that featured a strike from Lionel Messi and a hat-trick from Kylian Mbappe. Messi announced his plans to stay with the Argentina national team in a statement following the outstanding victory.
Lionel Messi The World Cup Winner
The Argentina captain scored twice for La Albiceleste as an exciting game finished 3-3 and went all the way to penalties. Messi then coolly converted his spot-kick as Argentina won the shoot-out 4-2 to be crowned world champions. The forward, who picked up the Golden Ball award as the best player of the tournament, went on to speak about his future after the game.
As soon as his team won the 2022 FIFA World Cup by defeating France, he said to TyC Sports “No, I am not retiring from the national team. I want to keep playing as a World Cup champion,”
Lionel Messi told Argentina reporters last week that, “I feel very happy, to be able to achieve this, to finish my World Cup journey by playing my last game in a final.” when he announced that the World Cup in Qatar would be his last. But the 35-year-old icon may still be around for Argentina fans to enjoy for a little while longer, though, as he has not decided to hang up his international game just yet.
After a hypothetical victory, much was made of Messi’s future, with many people speculating that he would end his incredible career. It was the last trophy Leo wanted to win before he decided to retire, he said “I had this big dream for a long time, I wanted to close my career with the World Cup. I cannot ask for more than this.”
“It’s crazy that it happened this way. I wanted it very much,” he told the media. “I knew that God was going to give it to me, I had a feeling that it was going to be this way. Now to enjoy. Look at this cup, it’s beautiful. We suffered a lot but we made it. We can’t wait to be in Argentina and to see how crazy it’s going to be. This was the trophy I have wanted all my life. This was my dream since childhood.”
Coach Lionel Scaloni –
Lionel Messi must decide if he wants to take part in another World Cup, according to Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni. Scaloni added, “If he wants to keep playing, he will be with us. He is more than entitled to decide whether he wants to keep playing for Argentina or not or what he wants to do with his career. He is such a huge player for us. It is such a pleasure for us to coach him and his teammates. Everything he transmits to his teammates is unparalleled — something I’ve never seen before.”
