Shooters from an extremist group killed 11 soldiers in Iraq while they were sleeping. It is considered one of the deadliest attacks in recent months.
An unfortunate event took place in Iraq at 3:00 am on Friday, when 11 soldiers were killed in their sleep by shooters of the Islamic State extremist group.
About the incident
The army barracks were located in Baghdad, a mountainous region. According to the Iraqi security officials, anything about the incident wasn’t clear at first. However, two other officials told the Associated Press in a conversation that the militants secretly entered where soldiers were sleeping and killed them. The officials didn’t want to reveal their identity as they didn’t hold a position to provide such statements.
The exact location where the incident happened is 120 kilometres away from Baghdad. The attacks occurred in Al-Azim district, Diyala province. It is considered one of the fatal attacks on the Iraqi military in recent months.
Other details are still unclear, and the Iraqi military hasn’t issued any statement yet.
Previous Encounters with militants
Back in 2017, Iraq defeated the Islamic State group. However, the militants belonging to Sunni Muslim extremist groups still conduct operations where they target members of the Iraqi army and attack other infrastructures and power stations.
Another incident occurred in October 2021, when Islamic State militants entered the Diyala province with machine guns. It resulted in eleven civilians losing their lives, and many others were injured. According to the security officials, militants took this step as they kidnapped a few villagers and asked for ransom; however, they didn’t fulfil their demands.
