Syria, still in shambles caused by an earthquake that shook the country two weeks ago, was struck by Israel just as the day began on Sunday. Damascus, the capital of Syria, was the target of their attack. Five people have died in the area of Kafr sousa, which is of high security and is always being watched as many senior officials and security agencies reside there. Several others have been injured and it is feared the death toll will increase in the coming hours.
Even though it is being termed as the deadliest attack on the Syrian’s center of administration, Israel hasn’t confirmed the attack nor taken ownership as it continues to follow its approach of staying mum on their assaults on Syria.
Israel-Syria relation, a long history of turmoil and hostility –
Conflicts began between the two western Asian countries since the 1949 Armistice Agreements which were intimated between Israel and Egypt, and Syria, Lebanon and Jordan. This was to terminate the hostilities of the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. Then, they went to fight each other in the 1967 Six-Day War, and the 1973 Yom Kippur War.
Tensions have continued to the present day which have been brought by Syria’s involvement in the 2006 Lebanon war, Operation Outside the Box implemented by the Israeli Air Force in September 2007 and the most recent Syrian civil war which has been ongoing for more than a decade now.
A quick comparison between Syria and Israel –
Syria, a country that has a rich cultural history has a population that is more than the double of Israel which is home to various holy sites. Iran’s involvement in the tussle-
The main target in Syria is to put a halt against the suspected conveying of Iranian weapons and personnel deployment. As per intelligence sources, a large part of Syria is under the hold of Iran unofficially. Hezbollah of Lebanon and the rest of the Iranian proxy forces currently regulate considerable parts of eastern, southern, and northwestern Syria as well as a number of the capital’s suburbs.
The strike in the early hours of Sunday was aimed at the Iranian militias and the Lebanese Hezbollah. The unexpected, rare and fatal attack has not only costed the lives of civilians but also caused damage to infrastructure near Omayyad Square which is in the center of the capital.
