The random doodles and scribbling we do while bored can mean a lot. Doodles are a form of expression and reveal a lot about a person.
I am sure that whenever you are bored, the best pastime activity is doodling, especially on the back pages of notebooks or diaries. We pen down random stuff like lines, curves, words, shapes or forms. But what we aren’t aware of is that doodling is a form of expression and can convey a lot about us. It can tell what’s going on in our minds and what is bothering us.
So, this article will bring upon reasons and facts on how doodle reveals what’s in our mind.
But first, let’s know what doodling is.
What is doodling?
As discussed above, doodles are shapes, forms, lines, curves or words that we create when idle. Usually, while we are doodling, we are catching up with something else as well. It can be a phone call, a meeting, listening to songs, watching TV, etc.
Hence, our focus is somewhere else, but we are simultaneously engaged in scribbling. We doodle out of boredom, relieve stress, and let out our feelings and views.
Doodles vary from person to person. Doodles can be fancy with lots of designs and scribbles, and at the same time, doodles can be just drawing circles or making flowers etc. Therefore, doodles are anything and everything we create during our idle time in layman terms.
How are doodles a form of expression?
As we create doodles in our idle time and when we are bored, we do not pay much attention to what we are making as our minds are already exhausted. Thus, doodles can mean a lot and tell a lot about us.
Whatever we doodle can tell us a lot about our individuality and personality. Doodles created in the corners of the page tell that a person is introverted and reverse.
Whereas doodles made on an entire page, taking all the space, suggest that a person is extrovert and out-going. Likewise, there are doodles where enough areas are left empty, and there are doodles where every white space is covered.
Many people doodle similar stuff such as flowers, stars, moons, hearts, smileys or circles etc. We do this because, since childhood, these symbols have recurred in our lives.
When we are little, the first thing we are taught to draw is either a line or a circle. Hence, a large part of what we doodle is ingrained in our minds from childhood. These determine our feelings, moods or dreams.
However, if there is a symbol that reoccurs in our doodles several times than another symbol, it means that we attach importance to them, and they hold significance in our lives.
You’ll ask how to tell what doddles tell if they are random, like glasses, cups or houses. In that case, we look at the shapes or forms used to create those doodles.
If a person has used many straight lines, it tells that a person possesses self-control, is a sucker of facts, has strong willpower and is emotionally intense. Usually, straight lines will be used a lot by males as straight lines signify masculinity. On the other hand, curved lines represent femineity. Too much use of curved lines tells that a person is emotional, creative and imaginative.
Shapes like circles, squares, triangles suggest our basic needs like love, survival, i.e., food, clothing and shelter, and security. People who want love and harmony will doodle objects with circular and curvy shapes like hearts, flowers, moons, stars, rings, eyes, clouds etc.
Squared shapes and objects, letters, boxes, tables, chairs, cupboards, almirahs etc., will be drawn by practical people, and security is a priority for them. People who are determined and need space to voice their feelings tend to doodle triangular and pointy stuff like nails, stars, diamonds, kites, birds etc.
Now, you may find a combination of items in people’s doodles. Like stars and flowers, a person needs love and has bottled up feelings in their heart. Thus, people need a variety of stuff.
Hence, we can tell what’s going on in a person’s mind and derive meaning from the shapes we use.
