The service is available on the myAadhaar portal . The move comes as the government encourages residents to upload proof of identity and address documents to revalidate their details.
The Indian government has launched a free Aadhaar card update service for its citizens.
The service is available online on the myAadhaar portal for the next three months, until June 14, 2024. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), which oversees Aadhaar-related matters and developments, has stated that the move will benefit millions of residents.
The Aadhaar card, which was introduced in 2009, has become an essential identification document in India. It is used by nearly 1,200 government schemes and programs, both at the central and state government levels, for the delivery of services. The government has stated that the free online service will help residents to update their demographic details with ease, ensuring better service delivery and enhancing the authentication success rate.
The free Aadhaar update service is available for residents who upload their Proof of Identity and Proof of Address (PoI/PoA) documents to revalidate their demographic details. The UIDAI has been encouraging residents, especially those who were issued Aadhaar ten years back and never updated it, to upload their documents on the myAadhaar portal. Physical Aadhaar centers will attract a fee of Rs 50 for any updates during this period.
Residents can log in with their Aadhaar number and a one-time password (OTP) sent to their registered mobile number. Once logged in, they need to click on ‘Document Update’ and verify their details. If the details are correct, they can choose Proof of Identity and Proof of Address documents from the dropdown list and upload copies of the same to update their documents.
The list of updated and acceptable PoA and PoI documents can be referred from the official website of UIDAI. If a resident needs to change demographic details such as their name, date of birth, or address, they can use the regular online update service or visit the nearest Aadhaar center. However, the latter method will attract charges.
More Developments to come
In an interesting development, the government is also working on a framework to allow residents to update other crucial documents via Aadhaar. Once this framework is in place, any change made to Aadhaar will automatically be reflected on linked documents stored on DigiLocker, which is the government’s digital vault for documents. While users will get a choice if they want this service, it may take some time to roll out.
The free Aadhaar update service is expected to benefit millions of Indian residents, especially those who may have difficulties visiting physical Aadhaar centers or paying for the service. It is a step towards making government services more accessible and efficient for all residents.
The UIDAI has urged residents to take advantage of this service and upload their documents on the myAadhaar portal. By doing so, they can ensure that their demographic details are up to date, and they can access government services without any hassle.
The government’s decision to offer a free Aadhaar update service online is a significant development that will benefit millions of Indian residents. It is a step towards making government services more accessible and efficient for all residents, and it is expected to have a positive impact on service delivery and authentication success rates.
