Pyongyang celebrates the completion of 10,000 modern apartments in the Hwasong district of North Korea. Kim Jong congratulated the people of the city and hailed the hard work of the workers from the military and civilians who had physically helped build the apartments. According to Kim, the milestone will mark a great step towards the state’s agenda to develop infrastructure in North Korea in the upcoming years.
Pyongyang housing agenda
The state of North Korea in 2021 declared an ambitious plan to develop 50,000 apartments in the capital by 2025. This comes against the backdrop of rising housing problems in the country and the state’s initiative to address them. Kim also described the project as yet another street of socialism built by North Korea which is full of happiness for the people.

The Event

Kim Jong Un also pressed the blast button to light the sky with firecrackers in order to demonstrate his happiness and best wishes to the city. The event took place on 16th April 2024, the birthday of Kim Il Sung and a day after the celebration of the ‘Day of the Sun’, the greatest Korean festival.
Hwasong celebrates with games
The event was also attended by Kim Jong Un’s daughter who accompanied him to watch the game competition between the Defence Ministry and the cabinet. The defence ministry won soccer by 5-3 and the cabinet won the game of tug of war by 2-0. The growing public appearance of Kim Jong Un’s daughter has come to rise particularly after her visit to the inauguration of the solid fuel intercontinental ballistic missile last week. North Kora has a tradition to celebrate with the games as evident in the celebration of the birth anniversary of Kim Jong Il, the father of Kim Jong Un in February.
Foreign speculations
There have been growing foreign speculations regarding the rising food shortage in the city. The likes of such ambitious infrastructural plans amid food concerns are likely to create an economical issue and price surges. Additionally, according to a local Korean news report, the state had used more than a hundred forced labourers to work on the housing development plan which has gone uncredited.
