After the excellent hosts put up an all-around effort to win the third game by 96 runs on Friday, Rohit Sharma’s time as India ODI captain began with a 3-0 whitewash of the West Indies. In the early overs, West indie’s bowlers effectively put pressure on the Indian batters, taking three wickets in the first powerplay.
In the minor match, Shreyas Iyer’s sensible 80 and Rishabh Pant’s aggressive 56 helped India a challenging 265 total. The hosts bowled them out for 169 in 37.1 overs as the visitors continued their poor batting performance. Â
The Indian team management gathered enough positives from their experimentation in the third-match series, including the emergence of pacer Prasidh Krishna as the strike bowler, with an eye towards the 2024 ODI World Cup. In the series, he took nine wickets.
Deepak Hooda, who did not play in the third ODI, showed potential as a middle-order batsman, while Suryakumar Yadav demonstrated that he could control his inherent aggressiveness if necessary. Â
The West Indies hitters’ lackluster batting performance throughout the series made the work of the Indian bowlers simpler. Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav, who returned as a duo, bowled effectively individually but not together. The visitors were never in contention and were outclassed entirely by yet another outstanding display of quick bowling.
In the fifth over, Pacer Deepak Chahar struck twice in his opening game of the series. He sent back Brandon King (14) when he edged to Suryakumar Yadav in the slip cordon, and then he dismissed Shamarah Brooks (0) on the penultimate ball of the over leaving the visitors at 25/3. From there, West Indies was unable to recover. Â
Kolkata will host three T20 matches following the ODI series commencing February 16. Earlier, Shreyas and the flamboyant Pant rescued India’s innings with a 110-run stand after India’s top-order collapsed and the team was reduced to 42/3. The pair played about with the opposing team’s offensive.
Shreyas, who was playing in his first game since recovering from COVID, appeared to be in his element, balancing prudence and attack. After his fifty, Shreyas increased the ante by completing his century stand with Pant in 112 balls.
Pant reached his seventh ODI half-century, but he fell in the 30th over, handing leggie Hayden Walsh (2/59) his maiden wicket and Suryakumar Yadav (6) his second India lost half their team for 164 runs.Â
On the other hand, Chahar (38) and Washington Sundar (33) did their parts admirably and put on a 53-run stand for the seventh wicket. Their contributions helped India surpass the 260-run milestone. India lost opener Rohit (13) cheaply after electing to bat.
Alzarri Joseph (2/54) pinned the hosts back, first dismissing Rohit Sharma on the third delivery of the fourth over and then dismissing Virat Kohli (0) on the fifth, leaving the hosts at 16/2. In the 38th over, though, a determined Shreyas played his strokes at will before delivering a sitter to Darren Bravo at long-off.
Kohli attempted to flick a down-the-leg delivery but edged to Shai Hope for an easy dismissal, prolonging his wait for his 71st century in international cricket. Shikhar Dhawan (10) and Shreyas Iyer (9) tried to save the innings but could only contribute 26 runs for the third wicket.
Dhawan, who was playing his first game of the series after recuperating from COIVD, was the first victim of pacer Odean Smith (1/36) when he was caught in the slip cordon by Jason Holder.Â
