Sheikh Minhaj.
Srinagar, August 22.
Delayed Elections in J&K:
The erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir is undergoing the Central rule since 2019, as revocation of article 370 reorganized the state in two Union territories, Jammu and Kashmir with legislature and Ladakh without Legislature. Since that time, no assembly elections has been held in Jammu and Kashmir. It is pertinent to mention here that last assembly elections were held in Jammu and Kashmir in 2014, When Mehbooba Mufti joined hands with BJP to form the government.
The Incumbent Administration’s Stand:
The LG administration is claiming that during last four years, different initiatives leading to the development of the region were taken, including the boost to the tourism industry and the noose has also been tightened against the backdoor appointments, corruption, malpractices and illegal occupation of the state land, in addition to it the politicians enjoying perks and privileges creating burden on the state exchequer, were also forced to live in the limits, which resulted in the resistance and opposition from their end.
Political Parties of J&K
While as,the political parties of Jammu and Kashmir, which once claimed that untill and unless the constitutional amendment of Article-370 is not restored to its original position, they will not contest elections, are now buzzing Vibrantly for the elections in Jammu and Kashmir, as they are out of the chair since long time.
The recent statements of Various political parties of Jammu and Kashmir including Bhartiya Janta Party’s J&K unit are evident that politicians here are eager to contest elections with a say, that people of the region needs local representation, as they don’t have the access to the bureaucratic dispensation serving Jammu and Kashmir presently.
Omar Abdullah’s Statement
While as talking to the media on Monday, the former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir and National Conference’s vice president Omar Abdullah says, there is no justification to delay the elections in Jammu and Kashmir, He added that the Government of India is afraid of the assembly elections. If the atmosphere for the Urban Local bodies, Parliament and Panchayat elections is conducive why assembly elections are being deferred in Jammu and Kashmir, he questioned.
PDP’s Criticism
His statements also faced the criticism from the People’s democratic party’s youth president WaheedurRehman Parra, who says National conference once acting as the custodians of the special status has reduced it’s demand to elections only, which resulted into the exchange of heated arguments as well.
Additionally, there were numerous all-party meetings in Jammu and Kashmir to discuss the delayed assembly elections, and a delegation representing all parties met with the election commissioner and other officials to demand for the holding of the elections as soon as possible.
What Local Residents Say:
In conversation with us, a local resident Ramees Ahmed Said that, the present dispensation of Jammu and Kashmir led by the lieutenant governor of Jammu and Kashmir Manoj Sinha is dedicatedly working for the welfare of the region and inhabitants here are having a sense of security. He added that Political parties are not representing the aspirations of the people but they are demanding for the elections for the sake of power only, otherwise people are satisfied with the work culture imposed by the lieutenant governor’s administration. He requested the Government of India to extend the tenure of Manoj Sinha here.
Supreme Court:
It is important to mention that, the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India is currently considering arguments against the revocation of Article 370, and a ruling will be issued soon. Following the Supreme Court’s announcement of its ruling, it is anticipated that further political action will be followed in Jammu and Kashmir.
