“Harry Potter” by J.K. Rowling is one of the biggest and greatest franchises in the world. It made Rowling one of the greatest writers of all time and earned her a lifetime of fame and popularity. There is not a single child in the world (neither in Hogwarts World nor in the world of us Muggles) who doesn’t know his name. Rowling’s immense power and capacity of storytelling and her immaculate capacity to attract the attention of her readers and just take them away to the world of Witchcraft and Wizardry. She made herself one of the most popular writers, as well as one of the most hated ones.
Despite, and presumably, probably because of its immense popularity, Harry Potter is banned in a large number of countries. A study conducted by the ACLU revealed that the Harry Potter series tops the list of banned books in Texas. Even so, Harry Potter’s popularity has not been shunned. Rather, it has only increased, as Hermione Granger said, in “The Order of the Phoenix” when the magazine “Quibbler” was banned by Dolores Umbridge due it having Harry’s interview,
If she could have done one thing to make absolutely sure that every single person in this school would read your interview, it was banning it!
Hermione Granger
Well, probably Rowling is a witch because she somehow prophesied her own story. Despite the ban on books, the rise in Harry Potter fandom has only increased.
Neville Longbottom’s Remembrall Scene :
Despite all of this, the book has quite a number of unanswerable moments that have apparently remained unanswered. One such moment is when Neville forgets what he actually had forgotten in the Great Hall in the Remembrall Scene. In the movies, the scene was utterly discarded and ignored as one of Neville’s awkward moments, but only true Harry Potter fans can spot the difference and actually properly realize what it was exactly that Neville had forgotten. It was his robes! The dress code in the Great Hall, where everyone was sitting and enjoying their food, it was only Neville who had forgotten to wear any.
Breaking the Dress Code in Harry Potter Movies :
This was an essentially crucial moment in breaking the dress code. The dress code was essential in the books, Rowling has elaborately described how the students were changing out of their normal clothes and into school clothes throughout the movies, but soon enough, that was no longer happening. In the movies, the characters were seen wearing normal clothes in a large number of scenes. In the scene where Buckbeak is being taken away, the three are seen wearing normal clothes. In many of the other scenes as well, they are seen not wearing school robes.
Costume designer Jany Temime, renowned for her work on the “Harry Potter” film series from “Azkaban” and beyond, revealed in a 2017 interview with InStyle magazine (via Mental Floss) that a deliberate shift in the characters’ attire was made. Temime’s intention behind this transformation was to create a more relatable image for the magical student body. She believed that by departing from traditional wizard robes, the characters could become more accessible to a broader audience.
In her own words, Temime expressed the desire for the characters to appear “normal” and like typical teenagers. This decision aimed to infuse a sense of realism into the fantastical world of “Harry Potter.” She sought to bridge the gap between the magical realm and our own, making the story feel less like a bedtime tale and more like a tangible, immersive experience.
Temime’s vision for the costumes was deeply rooted in the characters’ backgrounds. She emphasized the dysfunctional families many of them came from and their shared experience of living together in a boarding school, all while possessing unique and extraordinary talents. Through her designs, Temime aimed to capture the essence of these complex, relatable characters, ensuring that their costumes played a vital role in bringing the “Harry Potter” universe to life on the big screen.
Range of Characters in Harry Potter
The range of characters in the Harry Potter franchise is immense. The movie illustrates a large number of characters who represent different aspects. While Hermione, belonging to a muggle family has always had the urge to prove herself academically and to always stand out of the crowd through her hard work, intelligence, and perseverance, Neville, despite belonging to a family of both Wizards had a lack of confidence and was the awkward, shy, little guy.
Yet, just like all the shy kids in school have something of a greater value in them, Neville too had a bigger role. His little act of forgetfulness brought about a subtle change in the movies and the way the characters were clothed.
The Charisma of Harry Potter
The charisma of Harry Potter lies in the fact that this movie is not at all about Just Harry Potter, it is about everyone around Harry Potter. It is how big incidents influence the lives of children. It shows the different dysfunctionalities that each of the characters have faced in their lives, whether be it through brothers, parents, society, or evil itself. They all are sent to a Boarding School. The Book’s Charisma lies in the stories of friendship, bravery, loyalty, and heroism that are told through Harry’s life.
