Golf, a sport that is widely advertised as a game for the privileged class has been lacking a fan base and good opportunities in terms of players, though India has produced a few good players like Aditi Ashok who came very close to an Olympic medal, Subhankar Sharma who has won two European tours in few years but they are not hitting these heights again.Â
Anirban Lahiri has been one such player who has played the PGA tour which is one of the most prestigious circuits in the sport but has become a forgotten name in the sport with last time’s best performance coming in 2017 things haven’t been right for the man but this week has hit differently with he finishing second in Players Championship and a shot less than winning it.Â
Anirban Lahiri’s Amazing Journey at the tournamentÂ
What Lahiri has achieved in Players Championship (often referred to as ‘Fifth Major’) came from out of the blue, there have been problems with Lahiri’s game lately and even he addressed it by saying he has been trying to improve it but was always taken with a pinch of salt.
With rain interrupting the play for almost two days and the unusually cold weather that made Lahiri put four to five layers of clothing it was seemingly very difficult for the man to go on but Lahiri not only went on but also scripted his own journey.Â
Lahiri started with being around the leaderboard in the start but was not given much attention as it was the time when he starts sliding down from top in past but this time nothing of that sort happened.
In contrary he played his best game unlike past few years and even had chance to win or at least reach to playoffs but he couldn’t manage to score a birdie in the final round. With golf being played for 4 days and 72 holes, Lahiri had a good lead till17th hole.Â
Though he didn’t manage to win but the resilience and dedication shown by him in this tournament has already made him a great future prospect for Indian golf that too when many Indian veterans are not going on through great phase.Â
