The 193-member United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) unanimously passed a resolution proposed by Pakistan’s ambassador Munir Akram on behalf of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Tuesday.
Under the agenda item culture of peace, 57 OIC members and 8 other nations, including China and Russia, approved the declaration of March 15 as the International Day to Combat Islamophobia. “One religion has been elevated to the level of a worldwide day,” India expressed worry.
Ambassador T.S. Tirumurti, India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, said in the General Assembly that India hoped the resolution passed “does not set a precedent” that would lead to additional resolutions based on selective religions and divide the UN into religious camps.

“Hinduism has over 1.2 billion adherents, Buddhism has over 535 million, and Sikhism has over 30 million followers worldwide. Rather than singling out one religion, it’s time we acknowledged the prevalence of religiophobia “As Tirumurti pointed out. Anti-Hindu, anti-Buddhist, and anti-Sikh fears are on the rise, he said.
Concerning Islamophobia
Fear of, hate of, or prejudice against Islam or Muslims in general, especially when regarded as a geopolitical power or a source of terrorism, is known as Islamophobia.
