The summers have begun and it can be very tiring for some states like Gujarat and Rajasthan. Gujarat has faced a shortage in rainfall for the past two years and because of this, there isn’t any saved water in the main reservoirs.
Districts like Mehsana, Banaskantha, Patan, and Aravali are already facing water shortages. Experts said that if this situation prevails then there might be an acute shortage of water.
The total water saved in reservoirs as of April 21 was 292.27 cubic meters (MCM) whereas the gross total is 1929.27 MCM which is 15.5% of the total storage.
These particular figures were obtained from the website of Narmada, water resources, and the government of Gujarat because they upload the situation of water shortage on daily basis.
Parbat Patel, who is the Banakantha member of parliament also said that the groundwater level in Gujarat has gone down to 1000 feet.
He also added that they are dependent on the Monsoon season this year and also expecting that the farmers will use the water wisely and will adopt the drip irrigation method for farming.
B.S Deora who is the Director of research at Sardarkrishinagar Dantiwada Agricultural University said that due to water shortage the cultivation area has also shrunk and they are using the present groundwater for crops.
However, if the rainfall is also low this year, that might cause a problem among the farmers.
Shivram Patel who is the Former Sarpanch of Kumbhasan village also added that the ponds, wells, and reservoirs have dried out in their village and it is getting difficult for the people to provide water even for their cattle.
Many districts are facing water scarcity whereas in some places the situation is better as they had enough rainfall.
Patan and Banaskantha the situation is worse and the water has almost dried out, said their district officials.
