On Sunday, a day after the face-off between Shiv Sena and the couple, the couple was arrested by the Khar police. MLA Ravi Rana and his wife, Amravati MP Navneet Rana, were sent to judicial custody by the Bandra court.
Navneet will be taken to Byculla’s women’s cell, while Ravi Rana will be lodged in Arthur Road jail. The court asked the couple to file their reply by April 27, 2022, after which the matter will be looked into at the hearing on April 29, 2022.
Cause of the Face-off
The matter started as Rana recited Hanuman Chalisa outside Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray’s family residence. Responding, the Shiv Sainiks blocked the couple’s Khar residence on Saturday morning and started with the slogans in the morning. Some Shiv Sainiks even entered the premise of the couple despite the presence of the police.
As Prime Minister Narendra Modi prepares to visit Mumbai, the couple has stated that they will not recite the Hanuman Chalisa in front of “Matoshree.”
The Ranas are charged with promoting enmity between different groups and filing an FIR against CM Uddhav Thackeray and other senior Sena leaders. Mumbai police arrested six Shiv Sainiks with an FIR registered for gathering outside Rana’s home and threatening them.
The couple is charged with Section 34, 153A for promoting the enmity between different groups on religion, race, place of birth, language, and doing acts prejudicial to the maintenance of harmony of the IPC and 37 (1) and 135A of the Bombay Police Act.
