Such Cancer affects more than 3 lakh women worldwide and 50, 000 new cancer cases are diagnosed each year in India, making it the eighth most common type of cancer globally and the third most common cancer in Indian women after breast and cervical cancers. Asia and Europe have believed to be reported the maximum number of cases.
According to World Ovarian Cancer Coalition, the number of deaths in 2018 due to ovarian cases was more than 185,000. The fatality rate is expected to increase by 2040.
Regularly held campaigns for breast cancer have surely raised awareness and now breast cancers are early detected in affected people and treatments are achieving optimum success. Doing the same programs and campaigns about ovarian cancer will boost motivation and encourage people to come out to seek help and get cured. There is always hope!
Symptoms of ovarian cancer are often ignored due to a lack of knowledge and resources. Common signs are abdominal pain (low to high), tiredness, indigestion, sudden weight loss, pain around the pelvic area, eating disorders, and early satiety. Abdominal discomforts are often confused with acidity and left untreated.
The advanced stage of ovarian cancer (usually the 3rd and 4th stages), accounts for more than 80% of the annual cases. Detection at these stages makes the patient unfit for ovary removal surgery and the disease gets uncontrollable. In the surgical method, the uterus including the cervix, both fallopian tubes and ovaries are removed. Some portions of the peritoneum are also taken out during the surgery to control the spread of cancerous cells.
Women with adiposity, infertility issues, and on medication for a long tenure including hormonal imbalances, early menarche, and delayed menopause are the most vulnerable group getting affected by ovarian and other forms of cancer. Women with a family history of ovarian cancer are prone to get affected. They should make regular visits to gynecologists and get tested.
Ovarian Cancer is genetic and familial (it can be transmitted from one generation to another). Around 25% of the detected cases are due to gene mutations and transmitted from mother to daughter.
Nowadays due to stress and anxiety disorders among teenage and young adult women, ovarian cancers are seen more. Lack of physical activities including exercise, and unhealthy diets contribute immensely to the growth of cancerous cells in human bodies. Earlier, cancerous disorders were mostly seen among elderly group women aged between 55-65 years old.
Adopting a healthy lifestyle including exercises, a nutritious diet, and a good sleeping schedule could promote the growth of good cells in bodies and can help to fight the unwanted deadly cancerous cells in an effective way. Intake of Vitamins A and D and at least 30-40 minutes of physical activity could suppress the accumulation of cancerous cells. The use of perfumed and synthetic products around the vaginal area should be avoided.
Breastfeeding mothers are at less risk of getting ovarian cancer. Women who have a history of ovarian cancer or other genetic disorders need to take care of themselves beforehand. Practicing empathy could lower stress levels in human and leads to a good mental state.
There are over 170 organizations worldwide that are conducting seminars, talk shows, and webinars to generate awareness among women of all age groups. No woman should leave behind is their aim. In Pune, India, the NAG foundation is working for cancer patients by providing them mental and emotional support through their online and offline programs.
