Twin Tower: The time limit for the destruction of the unlawfully built 40-story Emerald twin-tower project in Noida(New Okhla Industrial Development Authority) has been extended to August 28 by the Supreme Court on Tuesday. The project was developed by real estate developer Supertech Ltd.
The plea put up by Edifice Engineering, the company that was given the responsibility of carrying out the Twin Tower demolition work, was granted by a panel of judges headed over by Justice D. Y. Chandrachud. The prior date of May 22 was designated as the cutoff for the destruction.
On Tuesday, the attorney for the engineering business argued that there were concerns over the safety of the situation and asked for more time. At first, the bench, which included Justice P. S. Narasimha, did not seem to be inclined to grant the request for three months and made the statement, “This is nothing but an effort to postpone.”
Amicus Curiae counsel Gaurav Aggarwal, on the other hand, was of the view that if the issue at hand was one of safety, then the extension may be allowed. In addition to this idea, he proposed that a status report be requested. The court took notice of the fact that the director of the Central Building Research Institute had recommended in a correspondence dated May 11 that it needs to be postponed.
After taking into consideration the plea, the bench issued an order requiring the Noida Authority to also submit a progress report before the subsequent Twin Tower date of hearing.
On August 31, 2021, the Supreme Court issued an order mandating the destruction of the Supertech Twin Tower buildings on the grounds that they had violated construction regulations in “collusion” with authorities from Noida. The supreme court reached the conclusion that the unlawful building must be dealt with in a severe manner in order to guarantee that the rule of law is followed. The top court was notified by the Noida Authority in February that the demolition work has begun, and it is anticipated that it would be finished by May 22, 2022, at the latest.
