Authorities in Karnataka are on high alert after members of Hindu organizations called for a protest march to the Jamia Masjid in the Mandya district town of Srirangapatna on Saturday, June 4. The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), the Bajrang Dal, and other Hindu organizations have said they would enter the mosque on Saturday and do puja there. Shwetha Ravindra, tehsildar of Srirangapatna, has imposed prohibitory orders in the town from June 3 evening to June 5 am in response to the march call. No parade, protest, or yatra will be permitted during this time. “Section 144 Imposed in Srirangapatna”.
Pramod Muthalik, the leader of the Sri Rama Sene, has indicated that his organization would back the ‘Srirangapatna Chalo’ appeal on June 4. A group of Hindu activists had previously written to the district government, demanding them to perform verification of the masjid in the same manner as the Gyanvapi mosque. Hindu organizations have called for participation in the ‘Srirangapatna Chalo’ campaign on social media and other venues. According to the organizations, the masjid site was formerly a Hanuman temple “destroyed, and the mosque was erected on top of it.”
With these organizations stating that the mosque was erected after the demolition of a Hanuman temple on the same site, many Hanuman enthusiasts are anticipated to congregate in the town, and officials are preparing to handle the situation without incident. “Section 144 Imposed in Srirangapatna” According to sources, they are awaiting government directives to manage many devotees who are anticipated to attempt to enter the masjid and do puja.Â
According to India Today, the march’s organizers were refused authorization by authorities. Nonetheless, leaders of the VHP and Bajrang Dal, who are at the forefront of the ‘Srirangapatna Chalo’ campaign, have said they would continue with their plans. The district administration has already increased security in and around the Jamia Masjid. Hindutva organizations have also requested permission from authorities to hold prayers in the mosque. Several petitions have already been made to management to safeguard the Jamia mosque from Hindu demonstrators. According to India Today, section 144 of the CrPC (Code of Criminal Procedure) restrictions will be in effect from 3 pm on June 3 to 12 pm on June 5.
The Jamia Mosque, also known as Masjid-i-Ala, was built by Tipu Sultan in 1786-87 and is situated within the Srirangapatna fort. Three inscriptions in the mosque commemorate nine names of Prophet Mohammad. The Narendra Modi Vichar Manch organization, which had submitted applications to the authorities for a mosque study, said that they “seriously think” the Jamia Masjid was established following the demolition of a Hanuman temple.Â
