On 2nd June, 2022, Congress President Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul Gandhi have been summoned for questioning by the ED (Enforcement Directorate), for being involved in the money laundering case in association with the National Herald newspaper, which was founded by the first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru.
Today Rahul Gandhi has appeared before ED. Sonia Gandhi has been issued a new date as she had been tested positive for Covid-19 on 2nd June.
Subramanian Swamy, a BJP MP, filed a private complaint in a Delhi trial court in 2013, alleging the Gandhi’s and others of conspiring to defraud and misappropriate cash from The Associated Journals Limited shareholders (the publishing company of the National Herald newspaper).
He claimed that the scandal occurred when the Congress-backed Young Indian Ltd. (YIL) bought AJL and transferred its real estate assets worth at least 2,000 crores to YIL.
He also charged the Gandhi’s and other close Congress leaders for robbing the party.
The party members of congress have planned a huge protest outside the ED office in New Delhi, they can already be witnessed creating chaos around the road that leads to the agency’s office.
On Saturday night, the Delhi police had rejected the request of protesting in order to maintain the law and order along with the decorum of the place.
After being told to reconsider their plea, nothing was done, hence the party went forward with their plan.
The owner and publisher of the paper is Young Indian Pvt Limited, which is published by Associated Journals Limited.
The Gandhi’s and prominent Congress leaders are being questioned after the agency filed a new case under anti-money laundering rules in response to a probe by the Income Tax Department against Young Indian Pvt Ltd.
The shareholding pattern and financial transactions of AJL and YIL is being investigated by the Enforcement Directorate at present along with the role of congress party in the functioning of both entities.
