On Tuesday, The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi asked the ministries to conduct a recruitment drive for 10 lakh people in the next 1.5 years under “mission mode”. Narendra Modi‘s directive came after a review of the state of human resources in all government departments and ministries, according to the Prime Minister’s Office.
In April, in a 4-hour-long meeting where he spoke about the recruitment drive, PM had focussed on filling up government job vacancies as soon as possible and following that every ministry and department had a list prepared with vacancies along with their sanctioned posts.
Earlier, the staff hiring process had been reportedly slowed due to the pandemic situation in the past years. The government hires individuals for the posts through Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) and the Staff Selection Commission (SSC). While officers for higher civil offices are hired through the UPSC, the SSC hires the subordinate staff for the central government.
The Central government’s decision comes amid frequent criticism by the opposition on the issue of unemployment. A large number of vacant posts in different government sectors has often been flagged.
The government came up with this decision after being criticized several times on the matter of unemployment in our country. In various government sectors a fair number of vacant positions have often been highlighted. The 18 months deadline given to the ‘mission mode” ends hardly 4-5 months before the current ruling government’s tenure ends before the next election.
Cabinet secretary Rajiv Gauba has said that the Prime Minister’s review meeting comes more than two months after he suggested the secretaries of the government at the Centre take immediate steps to fill up existing vacancies in various ministries and departments.
Meanwhile, Union Minister of State (MoS) for Personnel Jitendra Singh said the Prime Minister has taken a significant people-centric decision, which will further strengthen the employment scenario and bring a lot of cheer and optimism for India’s youngsters.
