Last week more than 30 scientists wrote about the “urgent need for a non-discriminatory and non-stigmatizing” name for the virus that causes the disease. So, now The World Health Organisation is working with the experts to come about with a new name for Monkeypox. 1600 cases of this disease have been globally reported in recent weeks. There are around 72 deaths that have been reported in native countries, but it was seen monkeypox has affected 32 new countries like the UK.
WHO will hold an emergency meeting next week to decide whether to organize the outbreak as an emergency of Public Health of International concern which is the highest in the UN agency. Chief of WHO Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus states that the outbreak of Monkeypox is unusual and also concerning.
What is the name of Monkeypox?
Monkeypox is a kind of disease that is caused by the Monkeypox virus, which is a member of the same family virus as that of smallpox although it was very much less severe. Here the infections are normally mild and also the risk is low in the general population, but the government of the UK has still bought stocks of vaccines for smallpox for guarding against more cases.
