The Bombay High Court ban the use of Plaster of Paris (pop)
On Monday, The Bombay High Court dismissed a petition filed by a social worker opposing the sustainability of the revised guidelines which were notified by the Central Pollution Control Board in 2010 and were revised in 2020 to ban the use of Plaster of Paris (PoP) for making idols which are used during Ganesh Chaturthi and Navratri.
Plea:
The plea by Ajay Sadashiv Vaishampayan said that the 2010 guidelines issued by the Central Pollution Control Board on idol immersion, were sufficient and a ban on Plaster of Paris idols was not necessary for Ganesh Chaturthi and Navratri festival.
However, The Court did not agree with the petitioner’s claim that using Shadu clay, as directed by the NGT, was more harmful than using Plaster of Paris for making idols.
Conclusion:Â
Regarding the above, the plea highlighted how the National Green Tribunal had quashed the Gujarat government’s decision to ban Plaster of Paris Ganesh idols, in 2013. HC upheld the ban on the use of POP idols during Ganesh Chaturthi and Navratri
A bench of Chief Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice MS Karnik dismissed the PIL.
