An open firing happened during a heated verbal dispute early Friday in downtown Chicago. Two men were killed and 4 people hurt. According to the police, the victims were leaving their workplace around 1.45 am when a person who they had an argument with fired with a handgun. Two of the victims were in their 20s. They were pronounced dead at hospital. The wounded victims are now in good condition.
There have been no arrests so far. But the investigation is underway. The details about the accused shooter are not released yet. The shooting took place at the 400 block of South Well Street, near Chicago Fire Department station.
More violence in Chicago
This shooting happened as the Chicago PD Supt. David Brown and Mayor Lori Lightfoot are supposed to briefly press on their safety plan for the 4th of July, which is usually the most violent day in the city.
Later in the day, a police officer was shot. According to the spokesman Tom Ahearn, His condition is still not known.
4 people were shot near Wells and Van Buren streets when an open fire happened on May 3. A woman and man were hurt as they stopped at a red light in their car. A woman who was crossing the street was also hit. Both these shootings happened in the 1st police district where killings are up to 100% and shootings up to 24% since a year ago.
The downtown firing comes as a surge in deadly violence in recent years in Chicago. According to the police. The number of homicides in Chicago so far is almost as high as 2021.
