U.S claims that Iran is assisting Russia in war with Ukraine
Iran to give combat drones to Russia
Jake Sullivan, White house national security adviser says Iran is preparing Russian troops to use the unmanned aerial vehicles. The U.S claims Iran is planning to supply hundreds of drones with combat capabilities, to assist Russia in war with Ukraine. Iran did not confirm or reject the US statements, claiming that technological cooperation with Russia existed prior to the war.
Jake’s comment comes prior to US President Joe Biden’s visit to Israel and Saudi Arabia this week. Neither country has so far joined sanctions against Russia over its war in Ukraine. Iran, which demands for Israel elimination, is seen by Israel as its biggest regional danger.A U.S. official familiar with the matter believes that Russia’s purchase of drones from Iran is a sign of its distress and lack of alternatives as a result of economic isolation. They supported Sullivan’s view that there were a “substantial” number of drones.
Since the incursion in February, the US and its allies have sent Ukraine weapons worth billions of dollars. Mr. Sullivan also added that the US would continue to “sustain the effective defense of Ukraine”. The political and military authorities of the United States have been in “near-daily contact” with Ukrainian leaders regarding the defense of their nation and how to recapture territory that Russia has acquired. It is unclear whether Iran has already shipped any drones to Russia or not. Sullivan pointed out that the Houthi rebels in Yemen had attacked Saudi Arabia using drones made by Iran.
Both the countries Russia and Ukraine have used drones frequently for a variety of purposes, including shooting missiles from a distance, dropping tiny bombs on targets, and conducting surveillance for artillery units and ground soldiers. Ukraine’s armed forces have used Turkish-made armed combat UAVs very successfully, while the United States and other allies have given Ukraine numerous different kinds of smaller drones.
Russian President Vladimir Putin will visit Iran. During the trip next week, Putin will attend a trilateral meeting with the leaders of Iran and Turkey, the so-called Astana format of meetings for Syria-related talks.
