A statement from Border Security Force (BSF) confirmed the arrest of a Pakistani national from Rajasthan’s Sri Ganganagar. He was trying to enter India illegally with an alleged motive of killing suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma over her remarks on Prophet Mohammad.
Interrogation is being carried out by the Intelligence Bureau and other agencies.
Trespassing of border.
The intruder is identified as Rizwan Ashraf, a resident of Pakistan’s Punjab province. According to a senior Border Security Force (BSF) official, the invader was detained on July 16 at about 11 p.m. from a location close to the Hindumalkot border outpost. A patrolling squad discovered him in a suspicious state and detained him immediately.
The reason behind trespassing.
“In the bag, he was carrying, we discovered an 11-inch-long knife, some clothes, food, religious books, and sand. He introduced himself as Rizwan Ashraf, a native of the Pakistani city of Mandi Burhanuddin, which is located in Northern Punjab,” said the officer.
According to reports, During the initial investigation, the suspect admitted that he had crossed the border to kill Nupur Sharma because of her controversial comments about the Prophet and intended to execute his plan after visiting the Ajmer Shareef Dargah.
The controversial remarks by Ms. Sharma had led to widespread protests within the country and attracted condemnation from a few gulf countries too.
SC verdict
Meanwhile, the Supreme court in its verdict today ruled no arrests should be made in the nine cases registered against Nupur Sharma for her remarks about Prophet Muhammad.
Justice Surya Kant while pronouncing the judgment said on July 1st, we granted the petitioner the right to pursue other legal remedies. But as of just now, she alleges, she can no longer pursue alternative legal remedies, and considering the number of death threats and warnings issued to her, there is an immediate need to protect her life and liberty.
SC in its July 1st verdict had lashed out at Nupur Sharma accusing her of single-handedly being responsible for heightening religious tensions in the country.
The supreme court will now take up the case on August 10, 2022, and till then no new FIR can be filed against Ms. Sharma.
