FC Bayern Munich has secured the signing of former Ajax center back Matthijs De Ligt on a five-year deal. It will enable the German Giants to acquire the services of the Dutchman till the end of the 2027 season.
The clubs were in direct contact on Sunday and agreed on the deal on the very same day, according to the king of transfers Fabrizio Romano. Bundesliga winners are set to have agreed on 80 million euros with Juventus for the transfer of the Dutch center-half.
The Dutchman, who is set to join FC Bayern Munich craved interest from several top European football clubs. Erik Ten Hag, the newly appointed manager at Old Trafford was reportedly excited by the idea of reuniting with fellow Dutch at Manchester United.
Even the arch-rivals of Manchester United, Chelsea were interested before they signed Koulibaly. German tactician Thomas Tuchel wanted to play with Dutch ball-playing center backs next season at Stamford Bridge with the inclusion of Nathan Ake and Matthijs De Ligt.
Earlier even Juventus were confident of Dutchman staying at the club. But with the dramatic turn of events, it seems that they have to sign the replacement for the former Ajax center-back. Kudos to the German giants FC Bayern Munich who managed to convince the Matthijs to join their club. It’s just a matter of time before they sign the official documents.
Matthijs De Ligt was part of that underdog Ajax side that made it to the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League three years ago. That team knocked out some of the elite teams of the competition such as Juventus, and Real Madrid. Their heart got shattered when Lucas Moura knocked them out by scoring a late late winner in the semi-finals.
Many footballing stalwarts including Cristiano Ronaldo were full of praise for his incredible defending abilities. The following season Matthijs De Ligt joined the undisputed Serie A winners Juventus, where he was paired with the generational greats Leonardo Bonnuci and Giorgio Chellini.
De Ligt who has spent three seasons with the club has won three trophies. He managed to grab his hand on a Serie A, Italian Cup, and an Italian Super Cup. The signing of De Ligt will help Bayern Munich to increase their squad depth.
