Earthquake in the Philippines:The strong shallow earthquake that hit the northern Philippines triggered collapsed buildings, four deaths and 60 hurt people.
Northern Philippines was hit by a 7.1 magnitude earthquake on Wednesday, killing at least four people and severely injuring around 60 citizens.
According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake in the capital Manila triggered shattered windows in buildings at the epicentre and shook high-rise towers more than 300 kilometres (185 miles) away.
According to the USGS, the shallow but strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.8 struck the hilly and underpopulated region of Abra just on the main island of Luzon at 8:43 am (00:43 GMT).
The USGS calculated the earthquake’s magnitude to be 7.0 and its depth to be 10 km.
In Dolores, which experienced the full force of the earthquake, panicked residents fled from their homes, and the market’s windows were broken, according to Police Major Edwin Sergio, speaking to AFP.
A lawmaker from the northern province of Ilocos Sur named Eric Singson informed the radio station DZMM that the earthquake had been felt powerfully. After the earthquake, rush-hour metro rail services in the capital were suspended.
According to media reports, the capital’s senate building was also evacuated.
“In the capital region, it was not destructive. I think it does not have an effect on structures but good to inspect vital facilities like the MRT,” said Renato Solidum, director of the state seismology agency
Later, Phivolcs reduced the magnitude to 7.0. Nevertheless, it was the worst earthquake to hit the nation in a long time.
Among those killed was a guy in Abra province who was struck by collapsing cement blocks while inside his home. At least 25 other people who were hurt in Abra were hospitalised, according to officials.
Initially planning to go to the damaged area, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., whose hometown is in the northern Philippines, authorized emergency rescue teams to be deployed to Abra. In order to avoid obstructing the emergency response, he, therefore, made the decision to delay his trip.
