Babul Supriyo, former Union Minister and BJP MP from Asansol twice, deserted the party ruling at Centre to join Trinamool Congress. Last Saturday, he officially joined TMC holding the hands of the Trinamool General Secretary, Abhishek Banerjee.
Supriyo’s dilemma
In July, the former Union Minister declared that he would be leaving active politics and remove himself from this position as MP. However, later he took to social media to voice his change of heart and decision to continue as the MP.
He commented that his excellent work deserves to be rewarded, and the extension of such a good opportunity from the opposing regional party just could not be neglected. Supriyo used to be Minister of State for Environment, Forest, and Climate Change in the Union cabinet.
Still, he lost his role in the significant regrouping of the Narendra Modi Council of Ministers. He does not see this action of changing parties as something new as many members have already done it before him because of personal resentments, and therefore this change should not make him stand out.
BJP MP Jagannath Sarkar counterblasts Supriyo
Babul Supriyo faces significant backlash from a BJP MP from West Bengal’s Ranaghat, who said that the former minister left BJP because of several illegal allegations that could be charged against him.
According to him, the minister who has been mentioned by Didi to be involved in coal theft and smuggling of cows is Supriyo. Thus, to steer clear of the Enforcement Directorate (ED), he changed the team.
If he had stayed with BJP, the documents regarding the crimes that TMC has with them would reach the ED. The Ranaghat MP also thinks that TMC will send Supriyo to be a member of the Rajya Sabha since TMC leader Arpita Ghosh has vacated the position.
Furthermore, Sarkar accused Supriyo of being dishonest as, according to him, he has misused his power as a BJP MP and enjoyed the luxuries that come with the title.
Supriyo was also condemned for not doing enough for the country’s welfare and only serving his self-interest by changing parties for the chair.
Bharatiya Janata Party, as per Sarkar’s comment, remains unbothered by this incident. They considered Supriyo as an outsider who, despite that, got a good position. His traitorous act reflects all others who left BJP for other parties and is highly deplorable.
Sarkar even goes as far as to state that everyone who changed from BJP will have their political careers come to an end.
What is Supriyo upto?
Babul Supriyo is currently elated to be a part of the Trinamool Congress and thinks of it as a fortunate opportunity to come his way. Former BJP MP suffered a loss in the 2021 Assembly poll from Tollygunge and, after that, got dismissed as the Union Minister of State in the reshuffle in July.
All these created differences between him and BJP, and he decided to leave politics for good. However, Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee’s offer is well accepted, and he states his previous decision as a “great disillusionment”.
According to TMC leadership, BJP should not find fault with the decisions of these members since it carried out large scale defections from TMC before the Assembly polls and even sent a charter plane to transport the members to Delhi.
