ATKMB and Rajasthan United, both with four points after three games, will compete for the other group B quarter final spot. Mumbai City FC defeated Rajasthan United.
At the Kishore Bharati Krirangan on Monday, Mumbai City FC defeated Rajasthan United FC 5-1 to secure their berth in the Durand Cup knockout stages.
Greg Stewart, Lalllinzuala Chhangte, Mehtab Singh, Ahmed Jahouh, and Vikram Pratap Singh scored goals for the Islanders as Gyamar Nikum made a goal for Rajasthan.
Rajasthan United had an opportunity right after the kickoff, but Mumbai City FC goalkeeper Phurba Lachenpa handled the ensuing corner with ease.
Five minutes later, Pereyra Diaz was sent in behind by Bipin Singh, and it was Mumbai City FC who eventually closed the distance.
In the 10th minute, Greg Stewart successfully finished an excellent through ball from Ahmed Jahouh past Niraj Kumar.
Lalllinzuala Chhangte had a good chance to extend the lead in the 17th minute, but Niraj managed to clear his cross just in time.
Aidar Mambetaliev, the captain of Rajasthan, deflected Chhangte’s cross into the goal in the 18th minute, making it three out of four.
Chhangte once more had ample chances, but Rajasthan United was able to fortify their left-sided defense. Mehtab Singh scored the Islanders’ third goal in the 36th minute after rising high to head home a Stewart corner kick.
Rajasthan United persevered even though Mumbai City FC controlled the majority of the first half. However, their attacks ceased in the final third.
Mumbai made the decision to slow down the game’s tempo after the resumption, which Rajasthan interpreted as a signal to boost the ante. Lachenpa was not troubled by their attacks, though.
Greg Stewart was fouled in the penalty area at the other end, but the referee almost awarded Mumbai a penalty before deciding against it at the very last second.
Vikrant Pratap Singh was tripped, though, and the referee had to gesture to the spot. For Mumbai’s fourth, Jahouh stepped up to smash the ball past Niraj.
Gyamar Nikum was able to avenge Rajasthan by cutting in quickly from the right and curling his shot with his left foot into the top corner. With that, the Rajasthan team gained some confidence, as they pushed forward to launch an attack.
Bektur Amangediev and Lachenpa got into a fight as they attempted to head a loose ball around the 70th minute mark. Both were out for the count as Lachenpa had to be replaced on and Bektur continued with his head heavily wrapped.
Diaz played Vikram Pratap in behind, but he squandered a one-on-one opportunity when he tried to get around the goalkeeper but ran out of room.
In the extra time at the end of regulation, Vikram made up for it by perfectly timing his run to remain onside from an Alberto Noguera high ball.
