Thursday saw the passing of Queen Elizabeth II at Balmoral Castle. Age-wise, she was 96.
Following reports that her health was a concern, Buckingham Palace issued notification of her death.
According to Buckingham Palace, Queen Elizabeth passed away peacefully in the afternoon. Family members learned of her deteriorating condition and hurried to Balmoral Castle to be with her.
She accepted the resignation of the United Kingdom on Tuesday, which was one of her final official acts as monarch. New Prime Minister Liz Truss was welcomed by Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
However, according to tradition, the meetings were not held inside Buckingham Palace, which raised questions about her health.
Then, after being told to rest on Wednesday night, she postponed the meeting.
Elizabeth surpassed Queen Victoria in 2015 as the monarch with the longest reign in British history, ruling for more than 70 years. She also held the record for the longest reign by a female monarch in history.
The Queen Elizabeth’s Throne
Elizabeth’s oldest child, Prince Charles, succeeds to the throne of Great Britain after her passing. But there has long been talk that Charles will give up the crown and hand it over to Prince William.
On February 6, 1952, Elizabeth succeeded her father, King George VI, to the throne. The following year, she was crowned.
It wasn’t until 1957 that she made her first state visit, travelling to the US to speak before the UN General Assembly.
She addressed a joint session of Congress for the first time in 1991 as a member of the British monarchy.
More than a dozen countries departed from the Commonwealth during her administration in favour of self-governing systems.
The Queen has persevered through criticism and has maintained her popularity in the UK. According to a study conducted in May 2022, 86% of British adults were happy with the queen’s performance.
In May, she commemorated her Platinum Jubilee, marking 70 years as monarch. The day was widely observed in Britain, and several Commonwealth countries also had celebrations.
