Two class 9 students suffered an unfortunate fate on Saturday morning when they drowned in a canal near Gurdwara Falahi Sahib on Ludhiana-Malerkotla road. The deceased have been identified by their family members as Vijay and Ayush, both aged 15 and residents of Daba. They were both students of a private school in the same area.
What led to the accident?
According to Dehlon Station House Officer, the two teens along with six of their school friends left home for school in the wee hours of the morning. However, instead of going straight to school, they decided to take a ride on their bikes. In their statements to the police, the boys mentioned that they decided to bunk school after they got late and weren’t allowed inside. The group then decided to head towards Kaind Canal Bridge to take a dip in the cold water.
What happened?
As per reports, Vijay and Ayush were the first ones to take a dip into the canal; they were followed by their friend Bhupinder Singh. While the others were still in the process of taking off their clothes, Vijay, Ayush, and Bhupinder lost their balance and slipped into deep water and drowned. The trio then raised an alarm and the other friends started shouting for help as well. According to the SHO, the locals managed to rescue Bhupinder in time but Vijay and Ayush slipped away and could not be saved. After a few minutes, the local police along with a team of professional divers initiated a rescue mission to fish out the bodies of the deceased teenage boys out of the canal.
The deceased teenagers were sons of migrant laborers who had migrated to Punjab from Uttar Pradesh.
