After India lost back-to-back matches in the recent T20 World Cup, an engineer from Hyderabad was arrested for online rape threats against Virat Kohli’s baby daughter. Ramnagesh Srinivas Akubathini, 23, was apprehended this afternoon by a special Mumbai Police team.
After cops began investigating screenshots of the threats, he allegedly changed his Twitter handle and pretended to be a Pakistani user. He’s been flown to Mumbai. Following India’s loss to Pakistan in the T20 World Cup, Kohli’s daughter received rape threats. The man, identified as Ramnagesh Alibathini, 23, is being brought to Mumbai, according to police.
The Delhi Commission for Women issued a notice to the city police last week, stating that it had taken suo moto cognizance of media reports of a threat made against the family of Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli.
The accused is an IIT graduate who is currently jobless. He had made a rape threat to Kohli’s 9-month-old daughter after Kohli had backed Mohammed Shami against communal trolling on social media following the pacer’s costly spell against Pakistan in the T20 World Cup in the UAE. India went on to lose by ten wickets to Pakistan, with Shami conceding over 40 runs.
The Mumbai Police’s cyber cell issued a statement to the media on Wednesday, saying, “By publicly releasing an objectionable tweet about the ten-month-old daughter of Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli and cinema artist Anushka Sharma, he has committed an act that will bring shame to the mind of a woman and defamed her parents.” The accused has been charged under various sections of the Information Technology Act.
The Delhi Women’s Commission served a notice on the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Cyber). According to a senior Delhi Police official, the notice was received, and the force has already taken cognizance of the matter and is conducting an investigation.
The DCW stated in the notice that online rape threats were directed at Kohli’s nine-month-old daughter since the team’s defeat in an India-Pakistan cricket match during the ongoing T20 World Cup.
The commission has also requested information on the steps taken by the Delhi Police to apprehend the accused. According to a senior police official, no complaints have been received in this regard thus far.
“We received the DCW notice, but the Delhi Police has already taken cognizance of the matter, and we are investigating all of the tweets and the handlers of the tweets in question. We are investigating the issue, but no case has been filed yet, “said the official.
In addition, the DCW chief has requested a detailed action taken report on the matter. “Given the gravity of the situation, please provide the requested information to the Commission by November 6 at the latest,” Maliwal added.
