Pamela Chopra, wife of legendary filmmaker Yash Chopra has breathed her last today, at the age of 74, on Thursday, April 20th. While the reason behind her demise is not yet known, but the reports have suggested that she was admitted to a hospital in Mumbai since the past two weeks. The sad news were confirmed by veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar in a tweet. Pamela is survived by her two sons, Aditya Chopra, who is married to Bollywood actress Rani Mukerji, and Uday Chopra.
Pamela was also known as Pam among her friends in the industry. Confirming the news of her death, Javed Akhtar tweeted, “Today Pam ji the better half of Shri Yash Chopra has passed away.” The veteran lyricist further went on to refer her as ‘witty, warm, intelligent and educated’ personality. He also revealed that Pamji had been contributing greatly to the films of Yash Chopra.
Several reports have stated that Pamela was admitted to Mumbai’s Lilavati hospital for around past two weeks. Yash Raj Films has also issued a statement following her death. “With heavy heart, the Chopra family would like to inform that Pamela Chopra, 74, passed away this morning,” read the statement. Further ahead, it also shared that her cremation will be held today at 11 am in Mumbai. The statement was concluded with gratitude for the prayers sent their way and the family requested privacy during this difficult times.
She recently made an appearance in Netflix docuseries The Romantics, which focused on the life events of her late husband Yash Chopra. During her stint in the series, she shared how she met her husband for the first time in Delhi, which was due to him missing his flight. The couple’s mutual friends played the role of cupid in their love life.
Pamela Chopra has been a recipient of several awards in her late husband Yash Chopra’s honour since his death in 2012, at the age of 80. The filmmaker had died due to multi-organ failure after being hospitalised at the Lilavati hospital, Mumbai. He was first diagnosed with dengue when being admitted to the hospital. Yash Chopra, a legendary film director, is believed to have changed the face of India cinema and became a brand of Bollywood. Throughout his career, which ran over the span of five decades, he has delivered some of the biggest hits of the industry such as Silsila, Kabhie Kabhie, Dil To Pagal Hai, and Chandni.
The couple’s elder son Aditya Chopra is now a successful director and producer. It has been believed that he has taken his father’s legacy to an even higher level. Their younger son Uday Chopra tried his hand at acting, and is now a producer.
