Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Delhi counterpart Arvind Kejriwal engaged in another round spat on Sunday on Twitter. The former chief claimed that the AAP chief was attempting to “compare the national capital with smaller cities” after failing to fulfill his guarantee of turning the national capital into London or Paris.
Kejriwal, however, responded by saying that Assam will see development like Delhi if the AAP is able to form a government in the northeastern state. Sarma and Kejriwal have been engaging in a verbal tussle over the last few days, each asking the other to visit their state and witness the developmental work undertaken there.
The spat began after Kejriwal, in response to a news item that said the Assam government closed 34 schools due to poor results, said that shutting down the institutes was no solution. Sarma then went on to take a dig at the Delhi CM, pointing out that his counterpart has started “expressing his desire to visit Assam” only now when the state is experiencing crises such as floods.
He went on to say that “You also came to power with the promise to make Delhi look like London and Paris, don’t you remember Arvind Kejriwal Ji? When you could not do much, then you start comparing #Delhi with smaller cities of Assam and Northeast” Sarma tweeted.
Sarma went on to claim that if the BJP came to power in a city like Delhi, his party would make Delhi the “most prosperous city in the world”. In another tweet over reports saying that Kejriwal is willing to visit the northeastern state, the Assam CM wrote that “I am upset and sorry that you didn’t have such desire when the people of Assam were battling natural calamities such as floods!”
“And yes, an invitation had already been sent to your deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia ji from Assam,” the BJP leader added. Sarma was apparently making a reference to the summons sent by a local court to Manish Sisodia, asking him to appear before the court on September 29 for a criminal defamation case filed by the Assam chief minister against the Delhi deputy CM.
Later, Sarma told news agencies that he had already invited Sisodia. Arvind Kejriwal may also come if he wants. “Delhi has been the capital of India since the Mughal times. He should compare Delhi with New York and Tokyo instead of comparing it with Guwahati and Shillong. It does not have resources as good as Delhi and if he runs 1,200 schools, I run 40,000 schools,” news reports quoted the Assam CM as saying.
“Kejriwal ji wanted an invitation from me to Assam. I have already invited Manish Sisodia, he must have gotten a notice from the Court as well. Arvind Kejriwal should also come if he wants,” Sarma stated.
Responding to one of Sarma’s tweets, the Delhi chief hit back saying, “Believe me, when ‘AAP’ government is formed in Assam, then they will also experience development like Delhi. When corruption is eradicated, there will also be no shortage of resources” he said
In March 2017, Kejriwal had vowed to transform Delhi into London if his party wins the MCD polls, but he had later clarified that he meant that ‘Delhi would be as clean as London’.
