An elderly couple, Suresh Chandra Gupta, 70, and his wife Krishna, 65, were murdered at their residence in Agra’s Bah area on Sunday, and police suspect theft to be the motive behind the murder as the couple’s belongings were scattered all over the place. Gupta was the owner of an oil mill.
Their bodies were discovered by neighbors who suspected something wrong after they did not see the couple leave their house till noon. Concerned, the neighbors entered the house, finding its doors open, they found Gupta on his bed and his wife lying on the floor, both dead.
SP East, Somendra Meena stated that the couple appeared to be strangled to death as some marks were found around their necks. Clotted blood was also found on Gupta’s head and the bed was soaked with some blood too. The exact cause of death will be revealed after the autopsy.
According to the neighbors, Gupta was last spotted by them around 7:30 pm on Saturday after he had returned from his oil mill. Earlier in the day, he had gone to meet his son Mukesh, who lives in the city. Gupta allegedly had a longstanding dispute with his brothers over a property, said a local resident, adding that both his brothers stay in Delhi with their families.
Agitated shopkeepers of the area downed their shutters to protest against the murder and demanded the arrest of the accused. The police assured them of the arrest of the accused once pinned and have already sent the bodies for post-mortem. In the meantime, CCTV footage of the area is being scanned.
SSP Prabhakar Chaudhary said that it seems that some people had entered the house, killed the couple, and gone through their belongings, which were strewn all over the house. Three teams have been formed to investigate the case and all angles are being explored, he added, studying the crime scene.
The couple’s family has been informed and an FIR will be registered on the basis of a complaint given by the deceased’s family members.
