On Thursday night, students of Sumy State University in Ukraine witnessed a horrible airstrike near the University premises. Students were compelled to spend a harrowing night inside a bunker.
Hundreds of Indian students stuck within the city of Sumy constantly complained that the situation is getting worse as the days are passing.
Faisal Ansari, a fourth-year Indian medical student in Ukraine, said, “People were crying, many even fainted. It’s getting difficult to handle our friends.”
Mahek Shaikh, a first-year medical student highlighted the similar plight of students while talking to Indian media outlet WION.
“We were sitting in our rooms when we heard jets pass. Our room lights started flickering and soon electricity and water supply went off. The entire city blacked out. We were immediately alerted to move to the bunkers,”
told Mahek.
Another student informed that the bomb was dropped very close to the hostel. The student further added that some friends also saw the blast from the window.
Running out of food
These students are running low on food supply as they await evacuation. Most of the grocery stores nearby are empty. Even if they try and find food somehow, the payment becomes another major issue.
“Supermarkets only accept cash and banks are closed. ATMs are out of cash,”
said Faisal Ansari.
On Wednesday, after the conversation between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin, there are chances of the evacuation of Indian students from the Russian side as per reports. But this has not been announced officially by either country.
Students in Sumy are watching for their turn after those in Kharkiv received an advisory from the Indian embassy in Ukraine.
