Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, or AOC as she is called, made her Met Gala debut with rather bold statements after flaunting her dress with the words “Tax the Rich” splashed across the back in red.
While some say it iconic and others say it is hypocrisy, in the most awaited star-studded fashion night of the year in Manhatten, the MET Gala where the U.S. Representative flashed her bright red message to the media, “Tax the Rich”.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez made her debut in a white-off-the-shoulder gown by the Brooklyn-based designer brand Brother Vellies as she ascended the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The event, which usually catches the eye in May, saw a September fall edition due to the pandemic this year.
Even so, to make things hot on the platter, celebrities dishing out their elegant looks on the red carpet officially kick-started the event.
This year’s Met Gala theme is “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion”, the gorgeous stars interpreted the all-American theme by channeling old Hollywood and paying homage to the ever-lively U.S. icons and the country’s melting pot of diverse cultures.
However, the gown worn by Democratic congresswoman AOC who attended the event with Aurora James from Brother Vellies, caught everyone’s eye.
With the all-American theme this year, the star-gazers saw various looks ranging from the most bizarre to amiable glamour.
Ocasio-Cortez signature message has completed the look with trademark gold hoops. While complimenting the white gown was a single pink flower pinned into her hair bun.
While speaking to reporters at the glamour event, she explained why she had brought her message out to the Americans watching the Met Gala, which many of Hollywood’s most prominent and wealthiest stars attended.
Why it’s a buzz and not hypocrisy?
As some interpret, Ocasio-Cortez’s choice of the white drape echoed the long history of American congresswomen who wore the shade about the women’s suffrage movement. She also wore a white suit to her swearing-in ceremony back in 2019.
“The women who paved the path before me, and for all the women yet to come.” she later claimed on Twitter, justifying it was a statement in honour of the women who revolutionized America and the rights of women.
Addressing the media at Met Gala, AOC said, “When we talk about supporting working families and when we talk about having a fair tax code, often this conversation is happening among working and middle-class people (on) the senate floor.”
Justifying the reason behind her “Tax the Rich” gown at Met Gala.
Some consider it an inflammatory statement at an event where the tickets cost $35,000 apiece, and tables were up to $300,000. While she added, “I think it’s time we bring all classes into the conversation,”.
She was joined on the cream-coloured red carpet by Aurora James, the creative director at the Brother Vellies’, famous for spearheading an initiative known as the “15% Pledge.”
Aurora James began the pledge on Instagram, urging retailers and corporations to commit to 15% of their purchasing power for supporting Black-owned businesses.
