Americans who work from home have recovered 60 million hours that they would have spent on traveling to and from work. All that saved time is now being used for sleep and for other leisure activities.
Having analysed data from the American Time Use Survey, research done by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York has come to the fact that Americans, when not working, spend most of their in time sleeping and doing other leisurely activities.
The survey maps activities undertaken by people during their non-working hours. The finding was that while younger people prefer spending time in restaurants, bars, etc., the elderly prefer spending time with grandkids or spending time completing domestic chores.
As reported by National Sleep Foundation, USA, an average human other than a few exceptions needs seven to nine hours of sleep a night for the human body and brain to work optimally.
WFH scenario in India:
Although the companies have started persuading their employees to return to the office, with 16% of the workforce still working from home, there is 25% who prefer a hybrid form of working.
Private enterprises like TCS and Wipro made it mandatory for their employees to work from office at least thrice a week adhering strictly to the roster created by the managerial staff.
According to a survey conducted covering 700 companies in India by Aon, an HR solutions company, 38% of firms allowed complete work from home but the number fell drastically to 9% in August. To ensure proper working by employees, a survey conducted by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development claims that 55% of employers support regular monitoring of employees to ensure proper productivity while only 28% agreed to have used software to do so.
High rate of resignation by employees where WFH is not allowed:
Another interesting finding was that the companies offering work-from-home opportunities had an attrition rate of 20% while those not letting employees work from home had an attrition rate of 31%. Some companies like Tech Mahindra, RPG Group, and PepsiCo are offering a hybrid form of a working model.
The mode of work can greatly affect the performance of employees.
Axis Bank made a big announcement employee working remotely. Annual evaluations show that the group that was working remotely fared better than those who were working in a hybrid or work-from-office (WFO) mode.
