It’s the land of temples, of Mata Vaishno Devi, of Prem Nath Dogra, the land of the sacrifice of Syama Prasad Mukherjee. We won’t let the people who disrupt the peace in Jammu and Kashmir succeed.”
– Amit Shah
India’s Home Minister Amit Shah is on his three-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir for the first time post the abrogation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019. He affirmed to the people of the Union territory that the people of Jammu would no longer suffer discrimination, and the time to sideline them has come to an end. Amit Shah mentioned, “Jammu and Kashmir is in the heart of PM Modi” while assuring the local people that no one will ever be able to come in between the era of development in the Union territories of Jammu and Kashmir.
Amit Shah directly went to the residence of Inspector Parvaiz Ahmad from the airport. The Inspector was shot dead on 22nd June as he was on his way home after a prayer session at a local mosque.
What was Article 370?
Article 370 of the constitution granted Jammu and Kashmir a “special status” in terms of autonomy and the ability to formulate laws for the State’s permanent residents. On August 5, 2019, Parliament diluted Article 370 and bifurcated J&K into two separate Union Territories, and since then, J&K has been ruled by the central government.
During the visit, Shah highlighted that “Prime Minister Modi decided to abrogate Article 370. Discrimination towards Valmiki Samaj and West Pakistan refugees has ended and Minimum Wages Act has been implemented in J&K.”
Further schemes of development for J&K:
While addressing the youth clubs organized at the Panchayat level, he mobilized the youth by extending a hand of friendship towards them and requesting them to come and connect with the Prime Minister himself and the Government of India. Reportedly, over 40,000 youth attended the event through video conferencing.
Shah appealed to the nation’s future to come forward and strengthen the institution of democracy in the region as no one should be allowed to hinder peace, development, and infrastructure.
On the topic of the ban of the Internet and social media in the region as an aftermath of the annulment of Article 370, Shah replied that for some time, the residents suffered. Still, it only saved their children, and as soon as the situation normalized, the government opened everything.
On a more philosophical note, Shah electrified the youth by talking about the vast array of opportunities available for them. And it depends on the person whether to move forward with a negative mindset or an optimistic mindset. “Don’t set small targets, don’t think, whether you could complete it or not,” he added. He encouraged the youth to just set the goal and move towards the target with consistency.
He further mentioned that Rs 12,000 crore worth of investment has already reached the union territory, and the government aims at a total of Rs 51,000 crore by the end of 2022.
During the visit, a key security meeting was also held, including the top civil administration officials, including Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and senior security officials from the Army, CRPF, and police. In this meeting, the home minister was briefed about the steps taken to eliminate terrorism in the region and counter-infiltration measures initiated by the forces. The civilian casualties which took place in the territories recently were also discussed in the meeting, and the possible steps for further improvement were considered.
