In a bump to the Congress ahead of the assembly elections in Himachal Pradesh, its senior leader Anand Sharma on Sunday resigned from the chairmanship of the party’s navigate committee for the state.
Anand Sharma, in a letter to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, said that he was not consulted on the planning for the assembly elections and cited several examples where he was not even invited for discussions as well.
Anand Sharma also wrote to the Congress president in his letter that his self-respect is “non-negotiable” and he has thus resigned from this post.
His resignation comes soon after another leader Ghulam Nabi Azad resigned as chairman of the campaign committee in Jammu and Kashmir.
The Tribune reported, the 69 year old leader has cited instances where he was not informed of key election strategy meetings in Himachal Pradesh.
Whereas, he told the party’s president that he will continue to campaign for the candidates in the state.
“Ghulam Nabi Azad has refused to assume the post of Campaign Committee President of Jammu and Kashmir due to some health issues. He has also conveyed this message to the Congress leader and also thanked the leadership for giving him the authority”.
The Congress will be locking horns with the BJP that is in power in the state in the elections that are pillory this year.
In 1982 , Anand Sharma had first contested assembly elections and also in 1984, he was given a Rajya Sabha ticket by prime minister Indira Gandhi, and has been a Rajya Sabha member ever since. He has held multiple key positions in Congress.
