The Andaman and Nicobar is all set to commission a 50-MW power project to get a gas-based power plant. Liquefied natural gas will be used to power this facility. It is being developed by the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) at Hope Town, Port Blair.
Is Non-Renewable Energy a matter of concern?
Now the world is turning onto a different track to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels and focus more on renewable energy sources. It is said that the usage of renewable energy sources will play a great role in reducing greenhouse gases which will ultimately protect the environment and reduce the irregularities in climate too. It can thus reduce combustion reaction which takes place while burning fossil fuels and generating electricity.
Regulation by ICZR
The Island Coastal Zone Regulation (ICZR) was set up in 2019 which places restrictions on infrastructure development along coastal regions.
The Union Environment ministry has given an approval to the various laws in the direction of regulating the coastal zones. They have paved the door for a renewable energy source to meet the demands. It was suggested by the Andaman and Nicobar Coastal Zone Management Authority (ANCZ), which is part of the National Coastal Zone Authority, in August 2021. (NCZA). The project was designed to lessen reliance on non-renewable and harmful energy sources such as diesel generators.
The initiative for the development of the southernmost stretch of the wider Andaman region has been launched under the NITI Aayog strategy. Under the policy introduced by NITI Aayog, the project for the development of the Southernmost stretch of the greater Andaman region has been planned. The various project proposals include free trade zone on the Southwestern coast, a transshipment port and a rapid mass transport system.

Back-up plans
Despite the fact that diesel is formed from non-renewable resources, there is no easy way to reduce its use right away. As a precaution, the administration authorities of Andaman and Nicobar have chosen to deploy diesel generators in the event of a complicated situation, particularly when the region is experiencing bad weather. For the time being, the authorities have decided to equip the power plant with dual-fuel capability, which means it would run on both LNG and diesel to meet the requirements.
