Anil Deshmukh was reportedly in poor health when he was seen in jail, according to Sanjay Raut, a senior leader of the Shiv Sena’s Uddhav Thackeray faction who was given bail last month.
Anil Deshmukh, a former home minister for Maharashtra and a leader of the Nationalist Congress Party, was granted bail by the Bombay High Court today in response to a complaint of corruption and abuse of authority brought by the Central Bureau of Investigation. However, the court immediately postponed the decision for 10 days so that the CBI could challenge it in the Supreme Court.
The Bombay High Court granted Mr. Deshmukh, 71, bail on October 4 in a money laundering case that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had filed against him; however, a special court had denied Mr. Deshmukh’s initial request for relief.
The NCP leader was detained by authorities after being taken into prison on November 2, 2021. In order to undergo coronary angiography, he was hospitalized in a private hospital in October.
Senior IPS officer Param Bir Singh claimed in March 2021 that Mr. Deshmukh, the then Home Minister, had assigned police officials the goal of collecting 100 crores per month from Mumbai’s eateries and bars.
Anil Deshmukh allegedly received 4.70 crores from different restaurants and pubs in Mumbai through police officer Sachin Waze while acting as the state’s Home Minister, according to allegations made by the ED, which is looking into the case’s financial aspects.
Earlier, on November 18, a Mumbai special court granted bail to dismiss Sachin Waze in the Mr. Deshmukh-related case.
However, Mr. Waze was not able to leave prison since he is a suspect in other instances, such as the bomb scare event outside industrialist Mukesh Ambani’s home and the subsequent murder of Thane-based businessman Mansukh Hiran.
Anil Deshmukh was reportedly in poor health when he was seen in jail, according to Sanjay Raut, a senior leader of the Shiv Sena’s Uddhav Thackeray faction who was given bail last month.
The high court had ordered the CBI to conduct a preliminary investigation in April 2021. A first information report (FIR) was filed by the CBI against Mr. Deshmukh and his accomplices for alleged corruption and abuse of official authority based on the results of this investigation.
After the high court ordered a CBI investigation into the corruption allegations made against him by Singh, the former Mumbai Police Commissioner, Mr. Deshmukh resigned from his position as the home minister in April 2021.
