A Russian law firm has filed a lawsuit against Apple for $1.3 million after the corporation discontinued its payment service in the country.
A Russian law firm filed a lawsuit against the company after the corporation discontinued its payment service in Russia, and demanded $1.26 million (90 million rubles) in damages, according to Reuters.
According to Reuters news agency, Chernyshov, Lukoyanov and Partners, a legal firm in Moscow, said on Friday that it is suing Apple, accusing the company of breaching Russian customers’ rights when it banned the operation of its Apple Pay services.
Due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Apple froze all device orders in Russia and halted several services, including Apple Pay, in March. During the invasion, several corporations, including well-known names like McDonald’s, Goldman Sachs, and Uniqlo, withdrew from the country.
“Moral harm,” according to Reuters, is one of the types of damages sought by the law firm in the complaint, which was filed with a Moscow court.
Reports from Reuters state that the legal firm claims limiting services lowers the value of Apple products, which it claims is discriminatory in nature under Russian legislation.
In an interview with Reuters, the legal firm said that it is still asking individuals to join the complaint, which might increase the overall amount of damages sought. According to a report published by Reuters, Apple is also requesting that its payment service in Russia be restored to full functioning.
A lawsuit versus Netflix, which had also ceased its service in Russia in April, was filed by the same legal firm in the same month.
Despite several attempts, Asiana Times did not get a response from Grigory Chernyshov, a partner at the legal company.
Apple did not react to the request for comment, which was sent outside of usual business hours.
When Apple announced that it was halting its services in March, it said that they were
“very worried about the Russian invasion of Ukraine and stand with all those who are suffering as a consequence of the bloodshed.”
