The Dhing police of Nagaon arrested him from his home (Inputs from Press Trust of India (PTI)). The accused was identified as Baharul Islam. He belonged to Dhing’s Rajabari residential area. The claims also indicated that he had a history of 15 years of corruption. Baharul was arrested on charges of corruption and gross mismanagement of funds.
However, there have been no official statements for the reason of arrest. Sources also claimed that he was taken for interrogation to Guwahati by the police. Similar cases were previously identified in Assam. A sub-inspector of school was arrested in December 2021. He belonged to the Shivasagar district of Assam.
The Government official held office in the schools of Nazira block. The accused was arrested on charges of accepting bribes. The police further explained that he was on a visit to a school situated near the Nagaland border. He observed a teacher missing from her duty. The sub-inspector later summoned the teacher for further investigation into the case.
The teacher however was absent from the meeting and sent her husband. The sub-inspector on the arrival of the husband asked him for a bribe of Rs. 15,000. He threatened to suspend the teacher if he failed to provide the necessary amount. He said he would fire her on the grounds of absence from duty and failure to provide meals to students.
However, the husband chose to approach the Directorate of Vigilance. The Directorate recovered the money from the sub-inspector followed by his detainment.
“A case under Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018) has been registered, and legal proceedings started,” said the Anti-corruption statement.
In another case, the District Elementary Education (DEO) officer was arrested. The accused was identified as Tarun Ch Bora. He was detained along with his office assistant. The office assistant Shiva Prasad Baruah was arrested by the Anti-corruption team. He was charged on the grounds of taking a bribe of Rs. 20,000.
He asked for the bribe from the headmaster of Gairoimari ME Madarasa. The team caught him red-handed with the money. The money was claimed to be regarding pension-related work. The DEO and the office assistant were both taken into custody for interrogation purposes. Recently, the BJP-led Assam government established control rooms to deal with the rise in corruption.
The numbers provided can be used by anyone. They may use the numbers if they witness any corrupt activities among Government officials. The Government claimed to bring about citizen support in their move against corruption.
