On Saturday, the Election Commission announced a 7-phase poll scheduled for the five states from February 10 till March 7. The results will be out on March 10.
The 2022 Vidhan Sabha elections in five states could be the most critical after the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The most talked-about elections to date when Narendra Modi came back as the prime minister with the majority for the second time.
The Vidhan Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Goa and Manipur, will be held when the Omicron variant of the novel coronavirus tally reaches 3,623. Besides this, it would be the first electoral test for the right-wing party, Bharatiya Janata Party, after farm laws’ repeal.
The elections will clarify whether BJP could neutralize the bitterness amongst the farmers of Punjab, western UP and Uttarakhand after the withdrawal of three farm laws. The poll will also answer a few questions.
Impact of Farmers’ protest in 2022 Elections
We can witness the impact of the farmers’ protest when PM Narendra Modi visited Ferozepur (the city of Punjab) for the electoral rally. However, he failed to attend the event, described as a security lapse.
The Punjab Elections is also crucial as SAD (Shiromani Akali Dal) parted ways with BJP in 2021 after farmers’ protest. In addition to this, Aam Aadmi Party is giving neck-to-neck competition to BJP and Congress.
COVID management and inflation
The pandemic coronavirus hit the world in all ways. It has affected the lifestyle and has taken the lives of many. During the second wave of coronavirus, heartbreaking photos and videos went viral. It clearly shows the mismanagement of the respective government.
At that time, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand were headlining for the destructive situations. Uttarakhand imposed negligible restrictions during the Maha Kumbh 2021, even after health experts warned about the devastating effects of COVID. While on the other hand, social media was flooded with miserable photos of the dead floating in the river Ganga and buried at the various Ghats.
Talking of inflation, then, this time, Petrol and Diesel prices hit the sky. And this could probably be the main point during the elections, as the Central Government cut down the costs of Petrol and Diesel. The result will tell whether the Modi government succeeded to resonate with people’s anger.
2022 Election is more of BJP-Congress
The main rivalries in UP polls are BJP and SP. However, after unsuccessful alliances of SP with Congress and BSP, Samajwadi Party has joined hands with minor parties. The upcoming elections in UP are essential for BJP, as Yogi Adityanath is the CM.
This time, it will be crucial for BJP as the rival parties will target CM Yogi over issues like farmers’ protests, consistent rise in prices of Petrol and Diesel, crime against women, the spike in Covid cases heartbreaking situations.
While in Punjab, Aam Aadmi Party may lead, as both the parties, Congress and BJP, face internal problems. The prime focus would be a yearlong farmers’ protest which ended after the repeal of the three contentious farm laws.
Uttarakhand as a state is a beautiful state. Ever since it was separated from Uttar Pradesh, voters were left with BJP and Congress. There is AAP this time in a row. The issues are Covid management, inflation, infrastructure, employment and armed forces.
