Match Highlights : As it happened
ATK Mohun Bagan had the upper hand in the opening period. For the whole first half, they were unquestionably the more aggressive team. Pritam Kotal may have missed the greatest opportunity of the half in the fifth minute. East Bengal returned to the contest once it gained ground. When they upped their number of attacks, it wouldn’t have been shocking if Naorem Mahesh scored his first goal in the Kolkata derby.
The second half started exactly the same as the first half, with ATK Mohun Bagan bragging with consecutive attacks with Petratos finding himself with space to break the deadlock in the 52nd minute, just as the packed fans held out their torches.
Ashique Kuruniyan played the striker in on the left side of the box, and he stopped before striking across the face of goal with his left foot, only to hit the upright. Nonetheless, ATKMB finally took the lead. Slavko Damjanovic put the Mariners ahead in the 68th minute, following a sequence of back-to-back corners that East Bengal FC were able to reject.
East Bengal FC, on the other hand, worked hard but were unable to consistently penetrate into the box. Their dedication to equalising resulted in two great chances for ATKMB in the span of seconds, and Dimitri Petratos was on hand to secure the derby for them. Kiyan Nassiri, a substitute, was sent through in front of goal, but Kamaljit charged down his effort; it was unfortunate for the keeper, as it landed directly into Dimitri’s path, and the striker tapped it into the net, putting ATKMB ahead by two goals.
In Kolkata, ATKMB will play their first playoff game. As a result of the defeat, East Bengal FC finished the season in tenth place. The Mariners’ winning streak over East Bengal has now reached eight games, including the I-League match in January 2020, before Mohun Bagan’s merger with ATK. East Bengal last defeated the Mariners in the I-League, winning 3-2 in December 2018.
